About Ship Isis
A Grade II-listed Victorian pub on Silksworth Row, built in 1885, with a long-standing reputation as one of Sunderland’s most haunted locations.
The name
- Originally known simply as “The Ship”.
- It’s said the name came from the crew of a ship called the Isis, who drank here after being paid off.
- Another local story says the bar was fitted with timbers from the Isis after it was wrecked off the Sunderland coast.
Mary Ann Cotton
- Local folklore ties the pub to the Victorian “Black Widow” poisoner, who did live and work in Sunderland.
- The claim that she lodged or killed at the Ship Isis is considered local legend rather than fact.
Paranormal history and lore
- Staff and customers have reported seeing a woman in Victorian clothing, thought by some to be Mary Ann Cotton, and a young girl.
- Cries, screaming, weeping and singing have been reported from empty rooms and the cellar.
- Legend says old tunnels once ran from the cellar towards the River Wear. They’re blocked off today.
